Phenomenal name change is announced

Margaret Giloth, founding president of the Bermuda chapter of Phenomenal Women Inc.

A women's charity has changed its name because it was too similar to that of another organisation for females on the Island.

The Phenomenal Women's Association (PWA) — led by Hott 107.5 DJ Miss Thang — has re-registered as Y(PWA), which stands for the Young Phenomenal Women's Association.

Ms Burgess, aka Kristy Burgess, told The Royal Gazette the change came about because the Phenomenal Women Inc. Bermuda group objected to the likeness of the names.

It is understood that a complaint was made to the Charities Commission and the Ombudsman eventually helped to resolve the dispute. The names of both organisations were inspired by the Maya Angelou poem 'Phenomenal Woman'.

Ms Burgess claimed the other group had been childish. "Truth be told, I didn't want to change our name," she said. "But when I am given lemons, I make lemonade."

Margaret Giloth, the founding president of the Bermuda chapter of Phenomenal Women Inc., said yesterday she would reserve comment until a joint official announcement was made about the change.

Ms Burgess founded her organisation in 2007 with the aim of becoming "Bermuda's premier young females' charitable organisation".

Since then, the charity has raised thousands of dollars for worthy causes with tag days and events such as a tea party for young girls and a lunch for young boys. Volunteers have also fed the homeless on Court Street.

The radio host said the "rebranding" would not alter the charity's focus on community, young people and some of the social ills affecting Bermuda.

She added: "I want to incorporate passionate individuals into our group that are able to deliver the same quality of enthusiasm as I.

"We need more members that are passionate about giving back and are skilled in promotions, event planning and volunteer recruitment.

"We are concerned about the state of our young women and all women alike. With our concerns and passion, this was why the PWA was created in the beginning."

Mrs. Giloth has been involved with the US-based non-profit corporation Phenomenal Women Inc. since it began in 1998 and started a Bermuda branch after returning here in 2005.
