Police issue an appeal for Portuguese language interpreters to get in touch
The Police need more Portuguese-speaking volunteers to interpret for people in trouble.
Their role would involve helping victims and witnesses alike who struggle to give information in English.
They would join a team encompassing a wide range of translators, including speakers of Polish, Greek, Turkish, Japanese and even sign language.
Police Constable Julie Gardiner explained: "We are down to only two Portuguese interpreters and that is really our most commonly used language so we are in a bit of a fix.
"The volunteers will be paid for their time and travelling expenses but will really be used infrequently. Likewise, if they are called and cannot make it that isn't a problem.
"They must be fluent in the language, both spoken and written, and must not have criminal convictions. Ideally they will be Bermudian rather than a guest worker, as if not, I have to seek permission from Immigration for them to be able to assist us. I would love to have about ten Portuguese speakers listed ideally."
