Police officer disciplined over car on sidewalk

A plain clothes Police officer has had his driving privileges revoked after a complaint about his car being left outside Global House in Hamilton.

A disgruntled member of the public told The Royal Gazette that the vehicle was regularly driven onto a no-parking area on the sidewalk in front of the building and left there for up to 20 minutes, while the detective visited the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Police spokesman Dwayne Caines said yesterday that the matter was in hand with the Bermuda Police Service. "The offending individual has had their driving privileges revoked and an internal inquiry has commenced," he said.

"The Bermuda Police Service would like to apologise to the public for that very overt display of disrespect for the rules that govern our Island. The incident is in hand and it's being internally handled.

"We believe that all officers of the Police service are subject to the same laws as our community and, again, we apologise to the public for that situation."

Corporation of Hamilton chief operating officer Ed Benevides said the senior traffic warden and appropriate inspectors had been informed of the complaint.

¦ A photograph of the vehicle and an unedited comment from the member of the public, who asked not to be named, appeared on page nine of yesterday's edition of The Royal Gazette. They were included due to an editorial error.
