Police probe gunfire report in Warwick

Gunshots were reportedly fired on Tuesday night on Middle Road in Warwick, leaving some residents concerned about the escalating violence on the Island.

An 83-year-old female resident, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Royal Gazette: "I couldn't sleep. What happened was I saw police outside the window shining their lights.

"Then my daughter came and they asked her if she had seen anything. "I feel fine. I am a Christian and so far I don't have any fear, but if I know something is happening outside my house that's when I get afraid."

"The devil is really moving out there isn't it," she added.

Around 8.50 p.m. Police received a report of gunshots near the junction with Tamarind Vale, outside T.N. Tatem Middle School.

Police attended the scene and searched the surrounding area, but nothing of note was found.

Tinae Bean, a 24-year-old mother of three, who lives in the typically quiet neighbourhood, said she didn't hear anything, though her eight-year-old daughter Genesis did.

"My daughter said 'oh mommy, I heard a gun'."

Ms Bean said: "I am more concerned just because my children play outside and it wasn't late. They play outside on the veranda so if a shot was fired it could hit."

According to Millard Lightbourne, 67, who lives close to Middle Road, the noises may have been caused by bikes speeding rather than bullets.

He said: "We're right here, we hear everything. I think someone just heard a bike or a car with its timing out and you will get that 'POW' noise.

"And I've heard it several times going down the hill. This area here has always been a place where people speed- it's a racetrack."

He continued: "Right now people are paranoid. If someone is shutting their door too loud they think it's a gun. And I was in the army, I know what a gun sounds like."

"Half of Bermudians are paranoid because of this gun situation. If Police would only start arresting people the public would feel more comfortable in their own home."

A 64-year-old homeowner said there were very few problems in the area and no reason to be afraid of living there.

He did admit violence on the Island was getting out of hand, and said: "People need to clamp down more. It's really scary. We need to do something."

Police are still investing yesterday's incident.
