Prison for man who stole clothes

A 42-year-old who admitted stealing $390 worth of items from a Hamilton boutique was sentenced to three months in prison.

Kevin Howard, of Pembroke, admitted stealing four pairs of jeans and a pair of shorts from Shannon's, on Queen Street, last Wednesday.

The Victoria Street resident also admitted stealing a silver motorcycle that day.

And he confessed to having stolen two packets of Hanes men's briefs and a pair of track pants from Flatts Menswear on Thursday.

In Magistrates' Court Howard said: "I would just like to apologise to the courts for my actions your honour. I am sorry, I messed up."

He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner he had a drug problem and needed to get treatment.

Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said Howard was only released from prison on July 28. The court heard he was sent to prison for six years in 1997 and also served jail time in 2006 and 2008.

Mr. Warner sentenced Howard to three months in jail for each theft, to be served concurrently.

He also placed him on probation for two years ordered him to undergo mandatory drug treatment and probation programmes with Court Services.
