Public funds improvements at MWI to the tune of $4m
The public has spent $4 million on renovations to three wards at the Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute (MWI).
The total cost of improvements to Fairview Court, a building on the MWI campus, is $6 million so far.
According to Health Minister Walter Roban, the remaining $2 million was paid by the Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB).
Shadow Health Minister Louise Jackson submitted parliamentary questions to Mr. Roban asking for the total expenditure to date and the estimated completion date.
The Health Minister said the work started in December 2007, when the building was vacated due to "significant deterioration".
"A project was initiated in January 2008 to clean and restore the building to clinical use," he said. "Phase one consisted of a thorough clean and decontamination and this was completed in July 2008."
The Minister said the project was temporarily suspended in September 2008. Phase two, which began in 2009, is expected to be finished this August.
"Government provided capital funding of $4 million in 2007/2008. This total amount has been spent to date. The BHB is assuming the cost of the balance of the works," Mr. Roban added.
Three men were arrested earlier this month over an alleged fraud that cost the BHB almost $1 million.
The men, a 55-year-old Paget man, a 43-year-old Pembroke man and a 39-year-old Pembroke man, were released on Police bail.
It is understood the men were working for the BHB.
Asked about the work provided and the contractors employed, Mr. Roban said: "There is an ongoing Police investigation being carried out regarding the project, which limits the amount that can be publicly disclosed. All information, however, has been provided to the Police and Auditor General."
The Minister said work undertaken at Fairview Court includes a repaired roof, mould remediation, internal renovation work, replacement of electrical and fire suppression systems and cabinetry.
Asked the total amount paid to each contractor, Mr. Roban said: "Individual contracts and payments are commercially sensitive and in the normal course of events, not publicly disclosed. Additionally, in this case some information is related to ongoing Police investigations."
