A broken water heater pipe on the fourth floor caused damage on that floor and two others below, estimated at about $25,000.

A Fire Service spokesperson said the station received a call through an automatic fire alarm at 3.39 a.m. and sent three appliances and 16 men.

They spent over four hours securing the pipe and sifting through the damage.

"The alarm activated the second floor fire alarm because water had leaked from the broken pipe,'' the spokesperson added.

Ceiling tiles and carpets were damaged in three rooms on the fourth floor and on the third floor four rooms received carpet, furniture and ceiling damage.

The second floor received similar damage.

BRITS VIEW TV COP SHOW TV Millions of British TV viewers will see the cop show Bermuda Grace at prime-time on Saturday night.

The action-packed movie, aired in the US in January, will be shown at 7.30 p.m. on Britain's ITV network.

But the show is unlikely to be followed by a series, it was confirmed yesterday. A spokeswoman for the London station LWT, co-producers of the film, said: "It's a one-off.'' After the film was shot on the Island last year, the British-American production team seemed confident a series would get the go-ahead.

Hopes were dashed when it gained only a 14 percent audience share in the United States, compared to an average of 20 percent.

The major US partner in the production, NBC, has said a final decision on a series will be made in May.

BREAK-IN SPREE CRM Crime in the West End continues to increase as five homes were broken into on Monday.

Police reported that at 1.30 p.m. a young school student at home sick got out of bed to answer the door bell. A man at the door asked some questions before leaving, but minutes later was seen by the boy in another bedroom of the house.

When confronted, the man ran off. Nothing was reported stolen.

"The intruder is described as being about 5 feet 7 inches tall, slim build, brown skinned complexion with a moustache. He was wearing a brown jacket, green shirt and grey trousers,'' a Police spokesperson said.

Other break-ins included three in Highpoint Lane, Southampton, where a small amount of cash was stolen.

A fifth was reported on Tribe Road Number Two in Sandys where thieves made off with a VCR and a small amount of cash.

CAR WARNING CRM Police have sent out another reminder that cars left unlocked run the risk of being broken into.

Between noon and 2 p.m. at Astwood Park on Monday, a car thief made off with a handbag and its contents from a private car that had been left unlocked.

And between 6.45 a.m. and 2.30 p.m. on Monday a thief stole cash from a wallet in a car parked at the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

WINDOW SMASHED CRM Police are investigating the smashing of a glass window at a Spanish Point convenience store.

The owner of The Point Mart reported that late on Monday night someone threw a concrete block through the window, causing damage estimated at hundreds of dollars.

Nothing was reported stolen.

WOMAN ARRESTED CRM A 38 year-old St. George's woman was taken into custody yesterday after allegedly stealing 10 cheques from her friend and attempting to cash them.

Police reported that at 9.30 p.m. on Tuesday night the woman's friend discovered his cheques had been stolen, and reported the incident to Police.
