Repairs return Causeway to two lane traffic tonight

Photo by Mark TatemA works and Engineering crew continue work a 100ft section of the Causeway which was damaged during hurricane Igor. The reinforcement job could be completed as early as today.

The Causeway will reopen this evening after Works and Engineering crews have been working to repair damage caused by Hurricane Igor.

One-lane traffic began when the bridge reopened last Monday evening after the storm.

According to a press release from Works and Engineering, several sections of the traffic barrier walls were breached by waves during the hurricane and reconstruction is now completed.

The statement said: "Underwater inspections by the Bermuda Police Service dive team, completed immediately after the hurricane, revealed a hole in the side of the Causeway.

"Further investigations by the Ministry's structural engineers revealed an area of subsidence parallel to the barrier wall on the west bound lane of the roadway.

"This area is currently being excavated and it will be backfilled with a strong concrete mix to provide a solid and safe roadway."

Crews worked "extended hours" over the weekend and based on their progress, normal two-way traffic is expected for tonight.

"The Ministry apologises for the inconvenience to the public during this reconstruction period and would like to remind motorists to reduce their speed as the travel through this very narrow construction site", the statement added.
