Resident donates $10m to hospice in Wales
Bermuda resident Robin Judah is making headlines in Wales after donating more than $10 million to a hospice in Blaenau Gwent.
Mr. Judah, who is a personal friend of the Hospice of the Valley founder Dr. Richard Lamerton, has in the past made annual donations of £156,000.
This donation, totalling £5.29 million (over $10.2 million), is designed to ensure that his annual donations continue indefinably.
The donation is entering an investment fund managed by Rathbones in London, from which it will be used, by Mr. Judah's request, to aid in the daily running of the hospice, not for new projects.
The hospice provides free care to people with cancer in Blaenau Glen, a service which costs around £1 million a year to run.
Chairman of the hospice's board of trustees Sue Kent said: "This is a tremendous gift on behalf of all our patients, staff, and volunteers, as well as people of the borough.
Mr. Judah was born in Calcutta, and spent several years working in London as a stockbroker.
Since moving to Bermuda in 1975, he has spent much time travelling, along with pursuing his interest in photography, an interest which has resulted in a book, "Organic Abstractions," which focused on pictures of plant life photographed with powerful lenses and a variety of film types.
Mr. Judah donated all the profits from the book to PALS, a local cancer charity on which he sits on the board of directors.
"I wish to extend our sincere gratitude to Robin Judah for helping to ensure the future stability of the hospice," said Mrs. Kent.
