Rider vows never to drink again after being caught three-times over the limit

A man caught driving with almost triple the legal blood/alcohol level said that it was his first — and last — time drinking.

Periandy Gajendiran, 31, from Pembroke, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while impaired on August 22.

Crown counsel Larissa Burgess said officers on patrol on St. John's Road, Pembroke saw Gajendiran riding a red motorcycle around 12.09 a.m.

The motorcycle was swerving left and right, repeatedly crossing over into the opposite lane.

The officers pulled Gajendiran over. He admitted he had been drinking at a friend's house.

Informed that he was going to be arrested, he said: "You can't catch Bermudians with the guns, but you can catch the Indians and the foreigners."

A breath test later showed that Gajendiran had 233 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit for drivers is 80 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.

Gajendiran told Magistrates Court: "It was the first time I drank, and I had two or three beers. That was the problem.

"I am sorry. It was the last time. I'll never drink again."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Gajendiran $1,000 and banned him from vehicles for one year.
