Calls to the anonymous Crime Stoppers line have increased dramatically in the new year.

So far 11 people have been shot in 2010, three of whom died as a result of their injuries.

Last weekend four individuals were shot including Kimwandae Walker, 35, who was murdered while flying kites with his two young children on Good Friday.

Politicians and church leaders have urged members of the community with any information to call the US-based Crime Stoppers and provide information.

The charity allows residents to give anonymous information to an overseas call centre which is then relayed to the civilian organisation who ensure no identifying information is contained in the tip before being handed off to Police.

Yesterday, Crime Stoppers Chairman John Drew said in order to protect the safety of the people who provide tips he was unwilling to comment on how many calls had been made in 2010.

But he did say that since it started in Bermuda 12 years ago:

l 3,456 calls have been made to Crime Stoppers Bermuda

l 217 arrests were made locally and overseas as a result of the calls

l 455 cases have been cleared as a result of the calls

l $20 million worth of illicit drugs seized as a result of the calls

l $44,000 in rewards have been awarded

"Crime Stoppers Bermuda must thank the community for their support over the last few months, calls have increased dramatically for this period compared to years past, and we hope the community will continue to utilise this completely confidential 800-8477 telephone service," he said.

"The increase of information received is equally as strong from members of the community who take advantage of our web tips and send 'information' and 'photographs' utilising our confidential web tips capability found on our website at www.crimestoppers.bm.
