Safety at bus terminal is reason for drivers' work-to-rule action

Bus drivers are on a work-to-rule because of safety concerns over Hamilton bus station, it was revealed yesterday.

The industrial action which has led to service disruptions and cancellations has been ongoing for at least a week.

Bermuda Industrial Union did not respond to requests for comment on the reason. However, a Government press release yesterday appealed to the public to help resolve the issue.

"One of the primary reasons for the work-to-rule is the public's failure to observe the no thoroughfare traffic rule at the Hamilton depot. The bus operators are concerned about their safety as well as the users of the Hamilton bus terminal and those motorists using Washington Street south," said a spokesman.

"The requirement for buses to reverse upon exiting the station has long been an issue and while the Ministry hired (an) inspector / dispatchers to assist they are often ignored by members of the public who choose to ignore the signs.

"There is also a 15-minute parking requirement in the bays within the depot area for the businesses that occupy Cedarparkade but the rule is having little effect. The bus drivers have expressed their frustration as there have been a series of accidents and/or near accidents as a result."

The spokesman said the Ministry of Transport was working with the Police and Corporation of Hamilton on solutions.

Dan Simmons, Director of the Department of Public Transportation said: "We appeal to the public to observe the no thoroughfare rule on Washington Street south for the safety of bus drivers and the public.

"The DPT would also like to reiterate the advice to the public that as a result of the work to rule some buses may not run according to schedule and passengers should take this into account when making transportation plans. The DPT values its passengers and regrets any inconvenience caused during this time as we work to resolve the situation."
