Shocked by battery lodged in soda bottle

Shocking discovery: Mildred Blyden Davis had the misfortune of finding a rusty AA battery lodged in the bottom of a bottle of Pepsi, produced in Jamaica, that she bought locally.

A 75-year-old woman was horrified to find a corroded battery in her bottle of Pepsi after she finished the drink.

Mildred Blyden-Davis of Ord Road, Warwick, says she suffered stomach pains and headaches after drinking the beverage about two weeks ago.

Following a meeting this week with the Department of Environmental Health, she said: "They were very concerned. They said it looked deliberately done, in fact, because the case of the drinks was sealed when I bought it."

Ms Blyden-Davis purchased the Jamaican-bottled Pepsi from a Court Street vendor.

She said: "I'm not a soda drinker but I decided to buy a case of 24 before Cup Match. I gave a few of them away over Cup Match and didn't hear anything back about them."

She decided to try one of the drinks while watching a movie roughly two weeks ago.

"It was dark and I wasn't looking into the glass bottle. At the end of the movie there was a little unfinished. When I went out and turned the lights on in the kitchen I saw this black object. I went off my head. I had no idea what it was."

The object turned out to be a corroded AA battery.

The senior citizen called the hospital immediately, but was told that nothing could be done.

The drinks vendor did not return her calls, she said.

She visited the Health Department earlier this week and an investigation is now ongoing.

"They're concerned, because this may have been done to others as well, maybe by someone at the Jamaican plant who was annoyed on the job," she said.

A spokesperson at Environmental Health said: "We're still trying to gather all the facts, and we will be carrying out a full investigation."
