Sound of music as couple sell 4,000 CD collection

Music for days: Brian and Carole Hetherington hold some samples of their music collection which they will be selling off this weekend.

Music lovers Carole and Brian Hetherington are selling thousands of CDs this weekend in an effort to begin a new chapter in their lives.

The pair have collected nearly 4,000 records and CDs over the past 30 years — ranging from The Beatles and Beach Boys to Miles Davis and Motown.

The divorced couple travelled to the US and the UK to build up their stockpile, which includes music from Trojan Records, Studio One and Island Records.

"It was a hobby and went to a business," said Mr. Hetherington. "People have alcohol problems, I had a CD problem. If I saw something in New York and I thought it was a good purchase, even if I already had it I would always buy another copy."

Mr. and Mrs. Hetherington said music played an important part in their relationship, but are now ready to kick up their heels and sell (almost) everything.

"I think it's a good time to sell things now because I am getting lazy. I work at the hospital and people, the kids in their 20s, they have been buying from me on a regular basis, so it just seems like a pretty good idea to sell."

"Everything is alphabetised and everything has gone on the computer, it's not like I am letting anything go," said Mr. Hetherington.

The avid collectors used to own Compact Discounts, formerly on Court Street, from 1992 to 1997. They are selling their 'Beg, Scream and Shout: The big ol' box set of 60s soul', which can cost anywhere from $300 to $600 on the Internet — but are hanging onto their Bob Marley collection.

Mr. Hetherington said: "I think it will be a good turn out, Bermudians like music. Bermudians generally want something new (and) most of the stuff has been well kept."

The CD sale will take place at their home on #1 Hermitage Lane in Devonshire tomorrow and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Most CD's will cost $10 or less.
