Government is to host a Healthcare Financing Summit on November 22 at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess.

Minister of Health Walter Roban said the Summit had been called as part of the Ministry's developing National Health Plan, particularly on health insurance, and the aim was to educate the public on rising costs.

The day-long meeting will also celebrate Bermuda's 40th anniversary for social health insurance.

According to the Ministry, Bermuda's health costs "continue to outpace national health, which means healthcare is becoming more of a burden to those with less means."

Mr. Roban attributed rising costs to "increases in utilisation, medical/healthcare inflation, the introduction of new technology and procedures, and long-term demographic trends."

Beginning with a student debate, the summit will feature Bermuda Health Council CEO Dr. Jennifer Attride-Stirling, Bermuda Hospitals Board CEO David Hill, and a discussion panel including Argus Group CEO Gerald Simons.

Mr. Roban said: "The Summit is more than a year in the making and seeks to capitalise on the discussions already being held regarding healthcare costs, to provide additional information to help better inform the public dialogue and debate."
