Third e-Waste recycling day of 2010 today
Tynes Bay will be accepting electronic items for recycling today.
Residents are encouraged to bring old electronics they want to dispose of to the Palmetto Road, Devonshire facility as part of Government's third and final e-Waste Recycling Day.
Anything that once ran on batteries or a power cord will be accepted items that can be dropped off range from toys to telephones, monitors, air conditioners and satellite receivers.
Stephen Gilbert of Government's material recovery office said people with concerns about personal information left behind on old computers could opt to have them rendered unreadable.
"The company we use for recycling has a secure facility for destroying hard drives," he said.
"You'll have that option when you drop off your computer. If you wish, you can choose for it to be re-used. It's up to you, depending on your security needs."
Corporate customers, he said, generally wipe their computers of information in-house before disposing of them.
Many re-used hard drives still contain information which hasn't been fully erased.
Software for "digital shredding" depends on the computer involved, and sites can be found online — plus do-it-yourself instructions for unscrewing a hard drive and destroying the disks.

A Waste Management spokeswoman said Bermuda's recyclable electronics are sent to a US Environmental Protection Agency approved facility in Philadelphia.
Government has sent away 110 containers for recycling in the past year.
The Tynes Bay facility will be open for e-waste collection between 9am and 5pm.
