Third History Speaks lecture tonight

The third in a series of lectures dealing with the history of the Island will be held tonight at Wesley Methodist Church.

The Bermuda Archives announced yesterday that the third of its "History Speaks" Summer Lecture series will take place featuring speeches by Dr. Quinto Swan and Kristy Warren. Both speakers will speak on the topic 'An Emancipation Journey: Abolition to Garveyism'.

Dr. Swan, an Assistant Professor of African Diaspora History at Howard University and Director of the Institute for the Study of Africans, will discuss the history of the encouragement of self-determination for black people in Bermuda.

Ms Warren, a Sociology PhD candidate at the University of Warwick and relief records officer at the Bermuda Archives, will speak on the stories of people kidnapped or tricked into leaving their homes, many of whom were enslaved. Two of the stories that will be discussed are of Bermudians.

Previous speeches in the series have dealt with the connection between Bermuda and the Native Americans, Quakers in Bermuda history and Bermuda's witchcraft trials.

Entry into the event, which starts at 7.30 p.m., is free.
