Trio of drink drivers are fined
Three people pleaded guilty to unrelated drink-driving offences in the last week.
Fatima Swan, 31, and Alexandru Carastoian, 34, both pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court to driving while impaired and Colin Simons, 50, pleaded guilty to driving while over the legal blood alcohol limit.
Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess said Police stopped Swan on October 29 near Abbot's Cliff after they saw her pull out of Summit View Drive.
Swan, of Hamilton Parish, swerved into the lane in front of a marked Police vehicle without wearing a helmet.
She admitted to officers that she had been drinking. When she was told she was going to be arrested, she said: "Why you doing this to me? I'm a good person."
A breath test revealed she had 149 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood, almost double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.
On Thursday she pleaded guilty to driving over the limit, but said she only got on her bike because her boyfriend had been hitting her.
"He was hitting me so I got away. I got on my bike and I rode away. They asked me if I wanted to press charges, and I said no. That's where I went wrong. You can call the cops on their walkman or whatever. They can tell you."
She said the bike was only at the house to be repaired, and she was swerving on the bike because repairs were not finished.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said she may have been hit but he found her story hard to believe. "If you're trying to get away, are you going to run and jump on a bike you know does not work?"
Simons, from Warwick, was pulled over by Police on Crow Lane on October 30 after he failed to stop for a random search at the junction of King and Dundonald Streets. Nothing was found in the search but officers noted that Simons smelled of alcohol and he was later found to have 108 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
In court he admitted being over the limit, but denied being impaired, saying: "I was fine. I only had three beers."
Carastoian, from Paget, appeared in court only hours after being arrested.
Ms Burgess told the court that Carastoian was pulled over after Police noticed him swerving while riding on Trimingham Hill.
He admitted drinking a glass of wine and a Jack Daniels and sprite. A breath test revealed he had 161 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.
In court, he admitted drinking too much but said the only reason he was swerving is because he had someone heavy on the back of the bike.
Mr. Warner fined all three defendants $1,000 and banned them from driving all vehicles for one year.
