TV actor to star in Bermuda Festival's 'Tempest' play

Coming to Bermuda: UK actor Anthony Head

British actor Anthony Head will play the lead role of Prospero in the Bermuda Festival of the Performing Arts' production of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' in February.

Educated at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Art, Mr. Head is an experienced stage and television actor who has worked in both the UK and the US. Most recently, he has been a regular cast member of the BBC drama series, 'Merlin', based on the adventures of the eponymous mythical wizard.

In making the announcement, chairman John Ellison said the Bermuda Festival was "delighted" that an actor of Mr. Head's calibre had been cast in the lead role, while Mr. Head was equally pleased to have been cast.

"I am hugely excited about playing Prospero in this production," he said. "It is an honour to be asked, and I am joining a long list of very distinguished actors who have played the role before me. The historical nature of this production of 'The Tempest' gives the challenge of playing him an extra sense of occasion — an added frisson. I can't wait."

Bermudian director Joel Froomkin said both he and the Bermuda Festival had been searching, not only for an actor with exciting marquee value but also someone who was a respected stage performer, with an ability to bring something truly exciting to one of Shakespeare's most challenging roles.

"It was very important to me that we cast an actor who could embody the insular, academic qualities of the character. Because of Mr. Head's vast experience playing science fiction roles, he will bring great integrity and gravitas to the play's mystical themes.

"He also possesses a wit and spark which I think will make our Prospero a truly unforgettable Prospero."

n 'The Tempest' will be the final performance of the 2009 Bermuda Festival, and will be staged at City Hall theatre from February 25-28. For tickets/further information see website www.bermudafestival.org or telephone 232-2255.
