Two men formally deny Boxing Day murder charges

Antoine Herbert Anderson

Two men denied murdering 30-year-old Aquil Richardson on Boxing Day 2007 when they appeared at Supreme Court yesterday.

Antoine Herbert Anderson, 31, and Phillip Anthony Bradshaw, 26, a Jamaican national, also denied wounding Lavar Smith with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Mr. Richardson was shot dead while sitting on a wall at the corner of Spice Hill Road and Horseshoe Road, Camp Hill, Southampton, at around 9 p.m. Mr. Smith was shot in the legs in the same incident. The case was listed for an administrative hearing on September 2, and the pair were remanded into custody until then.

In another matter during the monthly arraignment session, a woman admitted stealing more than $100,000 from her employer, Bermuda Realty Company.

Karla Elizabeth Trott pleaded guilty to nine counts of stealing and theft spanning the period November 2002 to April 2008. According to the charges, she took the money by withdrawing cash and writing cheques to herself.

Trott, 39, of Spring Benny Road, Sandys, faced a tenth charge, alleging that she stole $72,569 from the company between March 2004 and January 2006. She pleaded not guilty to that, with Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Michael McColm asking for it to lie on file and not be proceeded with.

No details of the offences were given in court. However, according to Bermuda Realty, Trott was an accounts administrator in the professional services division, going by the name Karla Smith at the time.

In a press statement yesterday, the company said: "On May 15, 2006 an employee of Bermuda Realty Company Limited was summarily dismissed for alleged fraudulent activity. At that time, the company took the necessary steps to ensure that all client accounts were accurate.

"We are committed to continuing to provide a high level of professional services to all of our customers and clients and can assure the public that we have an extremely proficient, responsible accounting team.

"Police decided to prosecute based on evidence of the alleged criminal activity and the company assisted the Police with the preparation of this case."

Trott will be sentenced at a later date after a psychiatric report and social inquiry report have been completed. Chief Justice Richard Ground granted her bail until then.

Meanwhile, Terrence Smith is set to be re-tried on November 3 on allegations of defrauding the Bermuda Housing Corporation, represented by top lawyer Sir Richard Cheltenham QC from Barbados.

Smith, a former BHC property officer of Euclid Avenue, Pembroke, was convicted of defrauding the BHC out of $1.2 million in March 2006 and sentenced to eight years in jail. However, the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction last November, after deciding he did not receive a fair trial.

Smith was bailed until another administrative hearing on September 2.

In a separate matter, Curtis Ambrose Simmons, 45, denied three counts of possessing cannabis with intent to supply, and one of possessing cannabis resin on September 9, 2007. The drugs in question were alleged to have been found in two American Tourister bags and also in a washroom.

Simmons did, however, admit to one count of possessing cannabis with intent to supply, which was found in a fridge-freezer.

No details of the circumstances were given by Mr. McColm. The Chief Justice ordered Simmons, of Spicewood Drive, Warwick, to return to court for a trial on November 19 and bailed him until then.

Another case saw a 49-year-old man plead guilty to committing incest with his daughter. He also admitted to four counts of sexually exploiting the girl while in a position of trust and two of sexually assaulting her.

The man denied three similar charges, which Mr. McColm asked to remain on file and not be proceeded with. Neither the defendant nor his daughter can be identified for legal reasons. He will be sentenced once a psychiatric report and social inquiry report have been completed.

Finally, Lee Brown, 49, a mother who took advantage of her position in charge of the Gilbert Institute after-school programme to steal more than $40,000, will be sentenced on August 28.

Brown, of St. David's, was remanded into custody after being found guilty by a jury on June 26.
