UBP's John Barritt promises more meetings with his constituents

Veteran MP John Barritt is likely to remain with the United Bermuda Party when the House of Assembly reopens on Friday — but a question mark will continue to hang over his future.

Mr. Barritt yesterday said he does not think he will come to a conclusion in the next few days over whether he will leave the party he has represented in Parliament since 1993.

On Thursday night, he held a meeting with residents in Devonshire South Central — a UBP stronghold — at which about 35 constituents turned up.

"There's no question people expressed their frustration and disappointment at what's been going on, not just with the United Bermuda Party but politics in general," Mr. Barritt told The Royal Gazette yesterday.

"There's a perception that we need to change the way we do things. They know of my advocacy of the need for reform, and it's fair to say that people were generally receptive and supportive of that.

"I hope to do more of these meetings and canvass with people. I'm committed to exhausting myself and reaffirmed my commitment to go back to them."

Mr. Barritt has said he would consider resigning from the UBP and as an MP, and then stand as an Independent candidate at the resulting by-election.

Regarding representing the UBP in the House while still contemplating his future, he said: "All of my colleagues know my position and I'm committed to trying to work with them and with those who left us to improving things in this Country and how we operate politically. That's the challenge that I face, and that we all face."
