Update 2: TS Fiona to pass five miles to Island's west
Forecasters say Bermuda should begin to feel the effects of Tropical Storm Fiona tonight.
Yesterday, the Bermuda Weather Service issued a tropical storm warning as Fiona moved north, northwest towards Bermuda and the latest report at noon today show the system's closest point of approach at approximately five nautical miles west of Bermuda at 7 a.m. tomorrow.
Public Safety Minister Senator David Burch issued a warning to the public advising motorists to use caution when travelling.
"In addition to asking cyclists to be extremely cautious when riding on our roads over the next day or so, we are encouraging all boat owners to secure all boats and other maritime vessels. Additionally, we are advising the public to secure their outdoor furniture, garbage bins or any other items that could be blown about by the wind."
A post by the weather service said: "A tropical storm warning continues. Tropical Storm Fiona is a threat to Bermuda. It is expected to move within 20 nautical miles of Bermuda Saturday morning.
"Tropical storm conditions are expected late Friday evening through Saturday morning. A generally unsettled theme will continue into the new week as Fiona moves away northeast."
Fiona is said to bring tropical storm force winds of 40 to 50 knots, between 46 and 57 mph, with winds building in speed tonight around 8 p.m. and continuing into Saturday.
The Island is expected to be hit by heavy rainfall tonight through Saturday. The public is encouraged to tune in to regular news reports and updates regarding Tropical Storm Fiona.
Meanwhile, JetBlue is offering passengers a way to change their tickets without fees as Hurricane Earl threatens the East Coast.
JetBlue Airways Corp. said yesterday it was to waive change fees and fare differences for customers booked for travel through Saturday to and from certain spots.
Customers can re-book for flights through Tuesday, September 14. Destinations include New York and span from Portland, Maine, south to Charlotte, N.C. Flights to and from Bermuda also are included. Other airlines have offered waivers including Delta.
