US drugs charge man is suspect in alleged Hamilton street beating
A father-of-two charged in Georgia for drug trafficking is also wanted by Bermuda Police for allegedly beating a man unconscious.
Jermaine Raheim Lewis Simmons, 27, was arrested in September with Jie Jovonne Stovell, 26, and Kavon Chancey Hart, 21, in Trenton, Georgia 99 miles outside of Atlanta.
The trio were charged with possessing cocaine, possessing cocaine with intent to distribute and trafficking cocaine. Stovell was also arrested for an obscured or missing license plate.
The cocaine is said to be 200 grams or more.
Simmons was wanted in connection with the beating of Damon Robinson in the early hours of August 22. His co-accused, Frederick Anthony Swan, 26, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mr. Robinson with intent to cause grievous bodily harm on August 25.
Carlena Caines, 28 was charged as being an accessory after the fact.
Mr. Robinson was found on Reid Street, unconscious and bleeding. He was found by a member of the public at 5.15 a.m. on Saturday outside Joell's Alley, in Hamilton.
Simmons fled the Island hours after the alleged attack.
Assistant District Attorney for the Superior Court in Trenton, Len Gregor said the trio appeared in court yesterday for the judge to decide whether or not there was sufficient evidence.
"Today occurred the preliminary hearing that determined whether there was enough evidence to bind the case over for the grand jury. The Police did make that determination.
"The case was bound over to the grand jury. Each defendant's cases are pending indictment. They still each have $100,000 bond as set by the superior court judge. Each defendant has not made that bond."
Mr. Gregor said the men were in custody at the Dade County Correctional Jail and appeared in court in jumpsuits.
Stovell and Hart are both Bermudian while Simmons has Bermudian and American status.
"The case will go on to the grand jury. I know that if two of the defendants make a bond, immigration will have a hold on two of the individuals. There was a hold on all three but Simmon's was lifted. The other two individuals still have immigration issues."
Asked whether he had any information on Simmon's being wanted in Bermuda, Mr. Gregor said while he knew nothing of the situation, authorities in Georgia would fully cooperate with Bermuda Police.
"If there was anything, the British authorities would contact our authorities. It hasn't been raised by anyone to me. I have not been privy to any information on that regard."
It is unknown when the trio will next appear in court as the court schedule for 2010 in Trenton has not yet been published.
Mr. Gregor said: "Our court schedule for 2010 hasn't exactly been set in stone yet. There are still some revisions being made.
"But in general the next time have a grand jury will be in the month of January."
Hart and Simmons were believed to be living in the Atlanta area while Stovell graduated from Alabama A&M last May.
