Warwick MPs pay tribute to Dennis DeSilva

Tributes poured in for a 46-year-old Warwick man who died Wednesday morning in a single-vehicle accident in Middle Road, Southampton.

Dennis 'Dennie' DeSilva was named by Police yesterday as the ninth road fatality on Bermuda's roads this year. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing and Warwick MP's last night paid their respects to the family and friends of a man who was taken too soon.

Alex Scott, MP for Warwick South East said he did not believe the accident was a result of reckless driving and was saddened by another loss on the Island's roads. He said: "I send my condolences to the family and we just hope the rest of Bermuda empathizes and sympathises with them.

"My deepest sympathies goes to the family. It was a tragic event all around.

"Police say Mr. DeSilva was driving on Middle Road, Southampton near Jew's Bay around 7.25 a.m. when he was involved in a single-vehicle accident.

Last night the Police Service extended their condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

Elvin James, the MP for Warwick North Central, said any loss was truly felt by every Bermudian and hoped the Island would be thinking of the family.

He said: "As Bermudians the first thing we have to think of is the family that's hurting. My sympathies are with them.

"It's always hard and we are always distraught when a life is unnecessarily lost. "

Mr. DeSilva's death marks the ninth road fatality on Bermuda's road's in just the last two and a half months.

On the same day of Mr. DeSilva's death there was a report of second vehicle crash at 6.15 p.m. at the junction of St. John's Road and Cox's Drive in Pembroke.

The 30-year-old Smith's man was on a motorcycle going west on St. John's Road when he lost control and fell to the ground.He experienced a fractured collar bone and two broken ribs and was treated at the King Edward VIIMemorial hospital, but did not need to remain for treatment. Last night, Mark Pettingill the UBP MP for Warwick West said he sends his deepest condolences to the family and though the reason for the crash is still unknown, urged Bermudians to go slower.

He said: "My deepest condolences and blessing go to his family at this time. Every time we hear about these type of tragedies it makes my heart ache for the families.

"I hope that it's at least causing people to stop and take stock and we need to address this carnage on our roads."How can we address this as law makers? These tragedies are mostly young people and I particularly saddled that someone from my parish has died."Inquiries into both incidents are ongoing.
