A battleground for votes

Admiring the view: Former Premier Dame Jennifer Smith is the MP for St. George's North.

One of the tightest marginal seats in the Country, Dame Jennifer Smith clung onto St. George's North for the Progressive Labour Party in the 2007 General Election, defeating Kenneth Bascome of the United Bermuda Party by 474 votes to 449.

Things were even closer four years earlier, when Dame Jennifer — then the Premier — beat Mr. Bascome by 423 to 415. Gavin Smith of the Gombey Liberation Party picked up 16 votes which, if transferred to the UBP, would have secured victory for Mr. Bascome.

On that night in 2003, 11 newly elected PLP MPs refused to attend party celebrations at Alaska Hall, instead holding a meeting about the leadership which led to Dame Jennifer being kicked out of office.

Dame Jennifer has been the area MP since 1989. For the previous 17 years she had unsuccessfully contested what was at that stage considered a UBP stronghold.
