Addict admits burglary charges

A 36-year-old drug addict who admitted stealing supplies from a nursery school and food items from various west-end eateries, appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Maxwell Mustapha Smith, of no fixed abode, admitted breaking into Tree Tops Pre School on five occasions between September 30 and November 2.

He also admitted to stealing a wahoo fish, valued at $140, from Fourways Inn, and a case of steaks, valued at $325 from The Swizzle.

The court heard how the head teacher at Tree Tops in Paget returned to school on October 1 to find a window opened and two fans stolen from the building. On October 23 staff found the property had been entered into a second time — on this occasion cleaning products including Lysol and Baygon, had been taken.

On two other occasions in October the preschool was burglarised. In total, close to $700 worth of supplies was stolen, and damage to the property was estimated at $1,615.

On November 10 a silver PGO T-Rex cycle, valued at $2800, was taken. And between December 10 and 12, several food items were reported stolen from Fourways and The Swizzle. Smith admitted to all these offences after Police found the two fans and the cycle in his possession.

According to Crown counsel Larissa Burgess, Smith has an extensive history of these types of offences. She said he is also a known cocaine addict, who is prepared to spend $200 a day to support his habit.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo requested both a Social Inquiry and a Bermuda Assessment and Referral Centre (BARC) report for Smith.

He then ordered him to appear back in court on January 30 for sentencing.
