Bank of Bermuda Foundation hands out $702,000 in scholarships

Twenty-one Bermudian students have been awarded scholarships worth a total of $702,000 for studies ranging from law to actuarial science.

They were given through the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Scholarships and range in value from awards of $1,500 to scholarships valued at $30,000 a year for up to four years.

Foundation Director and Secretary, David Lang, said: "Bank of Bermuda Foundation is delighted to be able to support Bermudians in their pursuit of higher education. We want to celebrate and reward Bermudians who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership skills and a commitment to the community.

"We hope that each and every one of the awardees grasp the opportunities that education will provide them and wish them the best of luck in their future studies."

The recipients for the Bank of Bermuda Foundation 2008 Scholarships are:

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Sir John W. Cox University Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies was given to Mia Finsness. It is awarded annually to a Bermudian pursuing post-graduate education overseas and is valued at $30,000 a year, for up to four years.

Mia recently graduated from Oxford University with a Bachelor of Arts in Law. In the Fall, Mia will begin pursuing a Masters of Law at Columbia University, New York.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Eldon H. Trimingham Master of Business Administration Scholarship was presented to Anne Marwick. It is awarded annually to a Bermudian proceeding with a Masters of Business Administration and is valued at $30,000 a year for up to two years. Anne is pursuing an MBA at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Sir Henry Tucker University Scholarship was awarded to Carika Weldon.

It is awarded annually to a Bermudian proceeding with undergraduate studies overseas and is valued at $30,000 a year for up to four years.

The scholarship is awarded to a student who has outstanding scholastic ability, leadership, devotion to duty and fellowship, together with athletic and cultural ability. When she has finished her studies, Carika will be required to return to Bermuda and help with services to the community. In the Fall, Carika will pursue a degree in Medical Biochemistry at the University of Leicester, in the UK.

* Bank of Bermuda Foundation Sir Henry Tucker Scholarship Education Grants have been awarded to Aliyyah Ahad, Anna Brewin and Amy Peniston and are worth $8,000 a year.

They were awarded to the three runners-up for the Bank of Bermuda Sir Henry Tucker Scholarship for a period not exceeding four years.

Aliyyah, a recent graduate and Head Girl of the Bermuda High School, will pursue a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science at the University of Toronto.

Anna Brewin is a recent graduate of Down House, UK, where she was the Head of House and Captain of Sports.

In the Fall, Anna will pursue a degree in Natural Science at Cambridge University.

Amy Peniston graduated first in her class from Burr Burton Academy, Vermont, and plans to attend Duke University, North Carolina, where she will pursue a degree in Engineering.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Financial Services Scholarship was given to Conchita Amory.

It is offered to help advance and develop Bermudians within the banking profession in Bermuda.

The scholarship is valued at $40,000 and will be disbursed equally over the third and fourth years of study.

Conchita is a mature student with 22 years work experience with the Bank of Bermuda.

In the Fall, Conchita will continue to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Business at Mount St. Vincent University.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Information Technology Scholarship was given to Katrina Darrell and Sherika Parfitt.

It provides financial support of $12,000 a year over a period not exceeding four years to students who are undertaking undergraduate IT related studies on a full-time basis.

Katrina, a graduate of CedarBridge Academy, has been working in the Bank of Bermuda's IT Department and is heading to the New England Institute of Technology to begin a degree in Network Engineering and Computer Servicing Technology.

Sherika, a recent graduate and Deputy Head Girl of Berkeley Institute, is also heading to the New England Institute of Technology where she will pursue a degree in Information Technology and Software Engineering.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation President's Awards for Scholastic Achievement was given to Vanessa Bean and is valued at $15,000.

John Adcock, Chloe Baron, Cornell Bean, Claire Grenfell and Chloe Minors were runner-ups who have been awarded $10,000 each.

The awards provide financial support for an initial period of one academic year to students who are in, or have just completed their final year of the Bermuda secondary school system or Bermuda College.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Joseph C.H. Johnson Scholarship was awarded to Sanae Russell.

The scholarship is valued at $30,000 a year for up to four years. The purpose is to provide financial support to a student who is proceeding with undergraduate studies on a full-time basis at Bermuda College or an overseas university approved by the Bank of Bermuda Foundation.

Sanae recently graduated from CedarBridge Academy where she was Head Girl and was actively involved in sports.

She has volunteered as a Candy Striper and with the Salvation Army.

Sanae intends to pursue a degree in Actuarial Science at St. John's University.

* The Bank of Bermuda Foundation Joseph C.H. Johnson Nominee Awards were given to Aliyyah Ahad, Anastasia Azzario, Rachel Ball, Jeoffrey Chrisnall, Sierra O'Heally and Jasmine Patterson who will get $1,500 each.

To be eligible for this award an individual must be nominated by their school principal.
