Car break-in thief confesses
A St. George's man has admitted to breaking into numerous cars in the Pembroke area and stealing thousands of dollars worth of property.
Shannon Jakeeba Trott, 28, of Wellington Back Road, pleaded guilty to six offences of theft between April 29 and May 7 during an appearance at Magistrates' Court.
The court heard that a wave of car break-ins on the Island, between April 29 and June 2, resulted in 58 vehicles being broken into, 22 of these happened in the Bulls Head car park.
Two weeks ago on July 25, Kevin Howard, a 40-year-old homeless man, appeared in Magistrates' Court and confessed to 26 car break-ins in the Pembroke and Devonshire area.
In many cases only small items were taken, however, the damage done to the vehicles was estimated to be more than $5,000. Howard was sent to jail for seven and a half years for those and other thefts.
Yesterday the court heard that between April 29 and 30, Trott entered a motorcar in Pembroke and stole a Sirius car radio, i-Pod, i-Trip connector, CDs, silver cufflinks and a suit and shoes. The total value of goods was $1,710.
On May 3, he stole $945 worth of goods from a Pembroke vehicle, including two Nintendo game consoles, nine Nintendo games and other valuables. On that same day, he stole an Apple iPod Touch, valuing $400 and $2 in loose change from another vehicle.
On May 7, Trott broke into three vehicles, stealing a total of $55 in change and causing damage exceeding $60 to one of the car's rear windows.
He was caught when his fingerprints were discovered on one of the cars and later escorted by Police to Bulls Head car park where he admitted to the offences.
Trott, a known drug addict, was taking part in the Camp Spirit drug rehabilitation programme, but suffered a relapse at the time of the offences.
Since being caught by Police, he has been back in treatment and has been making "considerable progress up to this point" explained lawyer Leo Mills.
Sentencing was adjourned to the Drug Treatment Court.
