A social inquiry report was ordered on two women who stole goods valued at more than $300 from the Phoenix Store.

Michez Smith, 24, from Tribe Road, Sandys parish, was charged with stealing $322 of products, including baby food, diapers, children's shampoo and a Halloween costume from the Phoenix store, where she worked as a cashier.

Tamika Zuill, 29, from High Point Lane, Devonshire, was charged with receiving the stolen goods. Both women admitted the charges.

Crown counsel Cindy Clark told Magistrates' Court that a floor supervisor had begun electronically closing the checkouts at 5.45 p.m. on October 8 when she noticed Zuill at Smith's counter with a large number of items.

When the floor manager later went to close Smith's register, she saw that the last transaction did not match the items purchased.

The floor supervisor notified a manager the next morning, who watched video footage of the afternoon and noticed the items were being placed in bags, but not passed through the register.

Police arrested both Smith and Zuill, who when questioned admitted conspiring to steal the items.

In the statement, it was said that Smith gave Zuill a list of items she needed her to steal.

In court yesterday, Smith told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that it was a stupid thing to do, saying: "I have already apologised to the Phoenix Store. I have two children I have to raise. It was stupid."

Mr. Warner ordered a social inquiry report on both women, releasing them on $1,000 bail to return on December 16 for sentencing.
