Conscript remanded after pleading guilty to attempted burglaries

A newly conscripted Bermuda Regiment soldier, in full army fatigues, appeared in Magistrates' Court to face charges of attempted burglary and prowling.

Kenneth Leverock, 19, of Granaway Drive, Southampton, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted burglary stemming from separate incidents on December 21, last year.

The court heard that on the evening in question Leverock was seen by a homeowner on Middle Road, Southampton, as he attempted to enter the house.

When the homeowner grabbed a flashlight to illuminate the area, Leverock escaped.

Senior Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney told the court that later that evening at a Southampton Road home a couple were disturbed by a loud banging on a pair of French doors in their home.

On Tuesday the court heard that the couple responded to the noise to find a "light-skinned male, approximately 6ft 3ins", wearing a red scarf over his face and attempting to kick in the doors.

Mr. Mahoney told the court that Leverock yelled "open this f*****g door, open this f*****g door, let me in", before escaping.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner refused a request by Leverock's attorney Larry Scott to allow him to return to Warwick Camp to complete his two-week Regiment training camp.

Mr. Warner ordered that Leverock be remanded in custody until the completion of a social inquiry report and a drug and alcohol assessment.
