Day of Remembrance for road death victims next month

A National Day of Remembrance will take place next month for those killed on Bermuda's roads. Families and friends are invited to a vigil for their loved ones on November 16, the United Nations' World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims.

This day is commemorated around the world with memorial services, marches and vigils, and R.O.L.O. (Remembering Our Loved Ones) aims to hold a similar series of events in Bermuda.

Shawnette Outerbridge, the charity's vice president, said: "We will be hosting a celebration to remember those who have lost their lives tragically on Bermuda's roads.

"We are cordially inviting families and friends who have been affected by such a tragic loss to come out and be a part of this event, and plan on having representatives from across Bermuda in attendance on the day."

R.O.L.O. is to hold a meeting today to decide on the schedule of events. This year has seen a marked rise in the number of road accident fatalities. The death of Tennison Fernando on September 29 marked the 13th death in the first nine months of the year, compared to 11 deaths for 2007.

Mr. Fernando, 40, a Sri Lankan national, died from head injuries after falling off his motorcycle into the path of an oncoming vehicle at a sharp bend in South Road, Southampton.

The National Day of Remembrance will be held at The Berkeley Cafetorium on November 16, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Those interested in attending should email: R.O.L.O@Bermuda.com or telephone 336 7656.
