Deadline passes for UK voter registration
The registration deadline has passed for British citizens who live in Bermuda and want to vote in Britain's General Election on May 6.
Persons who hadn't already registered as overseas voters had until April 20 to do so, according to Governor Sir Richard Gozney.
"Every British citizen who has been registered to vote in the UK within the last 15 years is eligible to vote in the UK General Election on May 6, 2010," said Sir Richard yesterday. "British citizens who were too young to vote when they left the UK are still eligible to register as overseas voters as long as their parent or guardian was registered to vote in the UK and left the UK within the last 15 years.
"However, British citizens wishing to vote in the May 6 General Election and who were not already registered as overseas voters needed to register as such by April 20. So the opportunity has passed in terms of the forthcoming election."
Current Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown will go up against Conservative leader David Cameron, and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg in next Thursday's election.
For the first time in British history the three main candidates have taken part in televised debates similar to those held prior to a US presidential election. The third and final debate, on the economy and taxes, will be held this Thursday.
Those eligible to vote may do so via post. For more information visit www.aboutmyvote.co.uk.
