Dr. Brown, taxi owners meet over GPS issue

Premier Ewart Brown met with taxi drivers on Friday — a week after some warned they would take "extreme measures" over their cabs being kept off the roads because they are not using GPS.

The Transport Minister said the meeting with the leadership of Bermuda Taxi Association (BTA) was about a variety of issues facing taxi owners and operators in the upcoming year.

"The meeting was productive," he said. "Good information was shared and there was good dialogue. I am confident we can reach mutually beneficial solutions in the year ahead."

Owen Darrell, secretary of the BTA, said: "We appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Premier and the feedback we received from him and the transport staff was very encouraging.

"They offered many valuable suggestions that we hope to implement to better taxi service as a whole. We look forward to continuing the dialogue."

Taxi drivers have warned they are considering protests because the Transport Control Department is failing cabs without working GPS.

Cabbies argue that since all taxis are now fitted with GPS they should not be penalised if the Island's dispatching companies don't turn on the satnav system to notify them of jobs.
