East End cops donate lights for kid's cycles

Eastern Community Action Police donated lights for pedal cycles to the St. George's Community Centre last week.

The aim is to ensure youngsters are safe while riding around poorly lit streets in the dark.

The idea came about when PC Jason Trott, who is a member of the Eastern Community Action Team, was on patrol one evening: "I saw several youngsters riding their pedal cycles in the area without any lights. It seemed to be a simple solution — if we could find a way to provide them with lights for their pedal cycles, they would be much easier for other vehicles to see and therefore safer on the road at night."

Pc Trott worked with Sergeant Andrew Exell and Constable Simon Joseph along with Charlie Marshall to put front and rear lights on the pedal cycles of members of the St. George's Community Centre last Friday evening.

The officers also provided U-Mark pens so the youngsters could mark their cycles, cell phones or other personal items with their initials and date of birth. In the event the invisibly marked items are lost or stolen and then recovered by Police, their owner's information would be identifiable under a special ultraviolet light.

A spokesman for the Police said: "This is just one example of the Bermuda Police Service working in partnership with a community based organisation to produce a positive outcome for all involved."
