A Pembroke man who lied to Police about his identity has been jailed for 30 days.

Ricardo Graham, 24, of Hill Crescent, was stopped by Police on December 30 after he was seen drinking alcohol from a bottle wrapped in a brown paper bag in a public place.

The court heard how Graham told Police his name was Paul Johnson in order to escape a warrant out for his arrest. Police checked out the name and found that Paul Johnson too had warrants under his name and decided to take Graham to Hamilton Police Station where they found out his true identity.

In Magistrates' Court on Wednesday Graham pleaded for leniency and said: "I didn't know (Paul Johnson) had a warrant, I used his name because I had a warrant. I wasn't trying to get him into any trouble."

He continued: "I didn't know it was serious. It's my first offence, I would like to make a chance, can I get a chance please?"

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo decided to make an example of Graham and said this type of offence was far too prevalent on the Island, before giving him a short term in prison.
