Four drunk drivers fined, banned for year
A drunk driver staggered out of his car and nearly fell over after Police chased him as he sped through Bermuda, a court heard.
Aaron Aitken was more than four times over the alcohol limit when he was stopped in the early hours of Thursday, October 16.
Aitken, 28, of Brimstone Hill, Devonshire, was pursued by officers who spotted him driving at 70 kph in Crow Lane, Pembroke.
He slowed down at one point, prosecutor Takiyah Burgess told Magistrates' Court, but then he speeded back up again and did not stop until he reached South Road's junction with Tee Street.
The defendant got out of his car and was unsteady on his feet, almost falling to the ground, before telling Police he had a few beers. A test showed he had 329 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his blood, against a legal limit of 80.
Yesterday, Aitken — one of four over-the-limit drivers to appear before Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner — pleaded guilty to impaired driving.
Adrian Wilson, 24, of Marsh Lane, was also chased by Police who saw him go through a red light and nearly crash his motorcycle in Court Street, at 3.20 a.m. on Sunday, October 5.
When he was finally caught in the City of Hamilton, Wilson told officers he had an altercation in a nightclub and was on his way home. He said he had not been drinking, but a test showed a rating of 140 milligrams of alcohol.
Wilson denied impaired driving but admitted driving with excess alcohol in his blood.
Ruben Bustamante, 28, of Parsons Road, Pembroke, was sitting on the kerb next to his crashed Renault Clio when Police found him at the junction of Lane Hill and Cavendish Road at 4 a.m. on Thursday, October 16.
He was injured but refused to go to hospital, saying his wounds were merely superficial. At the scene, he admitted he had "had a few" and at court yesterday he pleaded guilty to impaired driving.
Corrie Dillas, 23, of Crossland Lane, Warwick, lost control of his motorcycle and fell off on Harbour Road at 12.45 a.m. on Sunday, October 5.
Ms Burgess said he had minor road rash and Police noticed he had urinated on himself. He told Police: "I am drunk — I admit it," but refused to complete an alcohol test. He pleaded guilty to impaired driving yesterday.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined all four defendants $1,000 and disqualified them from driving all vehicles for 12 months. Each was given ten demerit points against his licence.
