Fuming motorists brand TCD chaos 'an utter mess'

Back to Back: Cars and trucks wait in line at the TCD station in St. George's, one angry motorist described the situation yesterday as 'an utter mess'.

Motorists were left fuming yesterday over long queues to get licensed at TCD with some drivers waiting hours before giving up and leaving in frustration.

TCD blamed the huge lines on month-end vehicle registrations combined with a large influx of taxis.

Recently Government had been failing taxis which didn't have working GPS but that policy was reversed this week.

One frustrated motorist reported at 11 a.m. that she had been waiting in a line of 50 to 100 cars since 8 a.m. at St. George's but found there was only one inspector on duty.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There is no way he is going to get through everybody."

She said there were no appointments available until March so people were just showing up.

"When the inspector arrived at 9 a.m. everybody ran up to him and he put their names on his clipboard.

"There was no organisation people waiting their turn in line didn't know about the clipboard and didn't get on the list.

"The system is really bad, it's not working at all. There were never this many cars before. This is crazy.

"There are ten designated spots available for people who show up on the day and people are going the evening before to park their cars in these spots. It is very difficult to get around the system."

And another woman gave up just after 2 p.m. after a frustrating and fruitless five-hour wait.

Earlier in the week she had tried to get one of the open spots by turning up at 5.15 a.m. only to find they were all occupied from people parking the previous night.

The woman, who also declined to give her name, contacted The Royal Gazette newsroom to say: "Lunchtime is over, 14 cars on the list have been done and I am told that because of appointments and fail slips he'll probably have time to see 10 more.

"So, I'm number 42 and I have to leave now because I won't be seen today.

"What an utter mess!"

Another woman, who would only give her first name of Linda, waited from 7.20 a.m. but was told at 3.45 p.m. that TCD were only doing one more vehicle and that she would miss out.

Yesterday TCD Director Randy Rochester said: "We have all available personnel on hand to deal with what is shaping up to be a very busy day, and I would just encourage those who are either at TCD or en route to TCD to exercise patience as we manoeuvre through the transactions."

Mr. Rochester reminded motorists that vehicles can be registered 90 days prior to expiration.

"And I would urge members of the public to visit www.etcd.gov.bm to conduct their transactions, as opposed to waiting for the last minute, which can result in unnecessary delays."
