Future of the UBP under spotlight
The central council of the United Bermuda Party will hold a special general meeting on the future of the party this evening.
Party members will analyse the findings contained in The Way Forward report — a document aimed at helping the Opposition become electable again. The report was dubbed "useless" by former UBP leader Wayne Furbert last month.
Last night, Opposition Leader Kim Swan would not divulge exact details of what would be discussed. He told The Royal Gazette: "This is an internal examination that we began in the months after the General Election.
"In the broadest sense we are looking to implement changes to improve our ability to serve the people of this country. Tomorrow night's meeting moves the discussion to the wider body of the party."
The Way Forward report, drawn up by a five-person committee chaired by former election candidate Wayne Scott, so disappointed Mr. Furbert that he threatened to quit the party unless it would agree to radical change. He said the report failed to map a way forward out of the party's malaise.
"I was disappointed and disgusted," he said in August. "Knowing that there were people on that committee that I had a lot of trust in — I won't call their names — who I always thought wanted change, yet nothing comes out.
"It makes you wonder what is going on. Who's controlling that report?"
It was reported in July that party reformers were disappointed with the document, which has not yet been made public. Deputy Leader Cole Simons said then that the document was a work in progress and would be put into the public domain when details were finalised.
Joining Mr. Scott on The Way Forward committee were backbench MP Trevor Moniz, former MP David Dodwell and Senators Charlie Swan and Jeanne Atherden. Mr. Moniz would not comment last night.
The UBP, which suffered its third successive election defeat in December, is said to be split between reformist MPs, who have at times called for a name change, for the older, white MPs to stand down and even for a new party to be formed.
Others in the caucus think the UBP just needs to keep plugging away and its turn in power will come again.
Tonight's meeting is for party members only.
