Gale was not as powerful as anticipated

A small craft warning is in effect for today after a windy weekend with winds reaching as high as 58 miles an hour.

And as a result of high winds, a JetBlue flight from New York was cancelled and an Air Canada flight was delayed from Toronto.

The forecaster on duty at the Bermuda Weather Service said: "We had a gale warning out and it was sort of at the lower end of the gale. We had winds in some sort of exposed areas up to 35 knots. Over the land, it was between 25 and 30 knots. The highest gust that I<\p>saw generally about the 50 knot mark, which is 58 miles an hour."

The forecaster said he worked last weekend and this weekend was much calmer.

"Last weekend, there were gusts of 70 knots. This weekend served as the last event. Yesterday (Sunday) we had a high of about 70F, so despite the wind and the rain it was quite warm. Today, these winds are going about into the north, north west. It will be noticeably cooler at 63 degrees."

The rain will for the weekend was .2 of an inch or five millimetres.

Asked what to expect for the week, the forecaster said: "In terms of the warnings, the gale warning was cancelled yesterday afternoon but a small craft warning is from today until tomorrow. It should generally be a much better day."

There will be a mix on sun and clouds today.

The rest of the week will see cloudy, rainy and sunny conditions with highs near 69 degrees on Wednesday.
