Govt. moving forward with Incinerator expansion

Government appears to be pressing ahead with plans for a third stream at the incinerator with an advert appearing yesterday for a senior project manager to oversee the upgrade.

The job will include managing the refurbishment of the existing plant and constructing a new ash processing plant.

In 2006 it was revealed that Bermuda churns out 67,000 tonnes of waste each year – more garbage per person than the population of Manhattan.

Government feared that a major breakdown at the Tynes Bay Incinerator could halt the entire waste disposal process.

The incinerator, which is more than a decade old, has two inputs for carrying garbage into the furnace.

It is intended to create a third stream, allowing more flexibility to shut down one of the other streams to allow for regular maintenance.

Last September emergency repairs, needed for the second stream, revealed extensive wear and tear.

Works and Engineering Minister Derrick Burgess said once the third incineration stream becomes operational in 2011, it should alleviate pressure on the two other streams.
