Halloween market set to boost St. George

New life: St. George will hold an Olde Town Market on Halloween.

St. George's Chamber of Commerce is hoping a peddlers' market will breathe a little more life into the 'ghost town' this Halloween.

On October 31, the town will host its first Olde Towne Market, which organisers believe will draw dozens of vendors and customers to St. George.

Cheryl Hayward-Chew, the head of the East End division of the Chamber of Commerce, said organisers are now making the final push to have everything in place.

"We've put together a committee, and we now have all our bases covered," Mrs. Hayward-Chew said. "We had to push it back a few times, but now we're all set to go on October 31.

"With that being Halloween, we're expecting some of the vendors to have a little fun with it."

Originally proposed as the "Ghost Town Market," the weekly Olde Town Market will allow licensed vendors and peddlers, including fishermen, farmers and importers, to set up stalls in King Square and Water Street to sell their goods.

Yesterday, Mrs. Hayward-Chew said applications were in the hands of around 50 different vendors, and several stores are planning to open their doors for the event.

"We will have a few stores opening specifically for this, and I know as we get closer to Christmas and people want to get their shopping done, more will open," she said.

• The Olde Town Market will be held every Sunday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. starting October 31.
