Hoteliers to discuss violent crime wave

The Bermuda Hotel Association (BHA) will meet to discuss the recent spate of violent crime after a woman was attacked in a Pembroke hotel.

Police report a 39-year-old woman was robbed of her handbag and sustained bruising and other injuries to her face and body during the attack at Royal Palms Hotel on Wednesday.

It is the second incident to visit the Island's hotels this week — as a 67-year-old American man was also burgled in his guest room at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess on Monday.

According to John Harvey, President of the BHA, members are set to meet in the near future to identify steps for improving hotel security.

"The Directors of the Bermuda Hotel Association recently met and discussed the recent spate of crime and will soon hold a meeting of the BHA membership.

"At that time, the current challenges we have will be reviewed and steps will be identified to assist the hotels with their security."

The Royal Gazette understands the most recent attack involved a local woman who had come to the hotel to book a room.

While in the lobby area of the Rosemont Avenue establishment, a man grabbed the woman's handbag and pulled her to the ground.

The attacker fled the area on motorbike with the handbag and its contents; the woman was hurt due to the fall, said a Police spokesman.

The theft was reported to police after 5.40 pm and officers immediately went to the sene and begun their investigation.

An hour later police arrested a 27-year-old man in the St. Monica's Road area in Pembroke, in connection with the offence.

"When the suspect was searched, he was found in possession of property which was reported stolen in two other unrelated complaints of stealing which occurred earlier in the day in the City of Hamilton," the spokesman said.

"He remains in police custody and is expected to make a court appearance in the very near future."
