'I feel that the PLP will prevail'
Wayne Perinchief, Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs is the PLP candidate for constituency 17, Pembroke Central.
Mr. Perinchief was born in Somerset but spent the majority of his life in Pembroke. He has a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from Queens University and a Master's in Human Resource Development and Management from Webster University.
He is a divorcee, a father of four children, has six grandchildren and is a former Assistant Commissioner of Police.
Mr. Perinchief was elected to the House of Assembly in November 1998 in the Pembroke West Constituency and was re-elected in 2003 in the Pembroke Central Constituency where he currently serves as MP.
One of the candidate's biggest concerns is ensuring that the area doesn't become overdeveloped.
"It's a very crowded constituency," Mr. Perinchief said. "I'm interested in limiting commercial development. It's starting to impact on the residents there to their detriment."
He explained he is keeping a close eye on the development of Belco so that it doesn't have a negative impact on the constituency. Also of concern are the narrow roads in the area of Mount Hill, Government Gate Lane and Crane Lane as there is limited access for emergency vehicles.
One of Mr. Perinchief's final concerns for the constituency is hopefully talking with Waterworks to provide water for residents in some of the areas. He said particles coming out of the Belco stacks negatively impact the quality of roof water in the area.
When asked about his achievements, Mr. Perinchief said: "I like to think that I've been instrumental in stopping any development other than central development, especially near Crane Lane and North Shore. I really did work hard to try to limit the impact.
"There is a bit of concern about the dump, even though its not in my area, its bordering my area. People have expressed relief that we are working hard to turn that into a park land."
As far as words about the election, the MP says he is confident.
"I noticed that I have for UBP, Mr. Warner running against me and then the surprise candidate, Mr. Darrell who's running as an Independent," he said. "I've heard his aim is to try to be a spoiler to take away at least 80 votes from me to allow Mr. Warner to win more or less by default. I feel that the PLP will prevail in that area. I'm happy with the people and happy to serve them for another five years at least."
