Island students can return to university as strike ends
Bermudian students at a Toronto university whose faculty has been on strike for three months will finally get back to class on Monday.
Back-to-work legislation was passed in Ontario on Thursday ending the industrial action at York University, which has 35 Bermudian students.
Geography student Patrice Phillips, 20, from Warwick, told The Royal Gazette: "I cannot even begin to explain how happy I am right now!"
She said it was about time the Ontario Government stepped in and did something about "this mess". "It's gone on for far too long and all agree that the union's demands are ridiculous, especially during this economic crisis.
"Most of the students have become very frustrated and many are thinking about transferring in September because there are rumours of another possible strike in 2010.
"The university notified us that they will not cancel the year but rather condense the rest of last term and this term into one. I suppose that's better than cancelling the year but at the same time it'll be extremely stressful."
York President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri said: "I am delighted that our 50,000 students will be back in class on Monday. Now is the time to look to the future."
Sid Ryan, from the Canadian Union of Public Employees, told Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that the union backed off its threat to challenge the back-to-work legislation in court after legal advisers said it did not have a strong case.
