The son of a Supreme Court Judge has been called to the Bermuda bar.

Taaj Jamal, the son of Puisne Judge Charles-Etta Simmons, was called to the Bar at a Supreme Court ceremony on Friday.

After the ceremony, Mr. Jamal said that it felt natural to follow in his mother's footsteps by pursuing a career in law.

"It feels like I've been a member of the bar my entire life," he said. "I was raised in the courts. It feels natural. It feels like it's what I'm supposed to be doing.

"I just hope that I can live up to the standard that's already been set, and that's a tall order."

Mr. Jamal studied law at the University of Buckingham and the College of Law before becoming a pupil at law firm Cox Hallett Wilkinson.

Mrs. Justice Simmons said that she was left speechless by the ceremony, which she described as his "birth into the world".

"He had always shown an interest in the law, but from time to time he would change his mind," she said. "I had a thought, I had a hope that he would go into law."

While Mr. Jamal was excited about the event, he said that it was only the first step.

"The next thing for me to do is perfect my trade," he said. "This is really only the first step, it's what I do after this that matters."
