Former Belco CEO Llewellyn Vorley died yesterday at the age of 91.

Mr. Vorley worked at Belco for 36 years, starting in 1946 after graduating from Harvard University with a degree in economics and serving five years in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

A keen sailor, Mr. Vorley was a founding member of the Bermuda Yachting Association and served as Commodore of the Bermuda Yacht Club.

In 2001, he was honoured for his service to the community in the Queen's New Year's Honours list, which named him an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Mr. Vorley's daughter, Nancy Prado, called her father a gentleman and a person of immense kindness.

"We all feel it was very poignant that he passed on Remembrance Day," she said.

"He was a man of such incredible valour and courage. This will always be the day we remember him.

Belco CEO Vince Ingham said last night: "He had a quick mind and a wit with a real sense of humour.

"He was always interested in not just the company, but the people in the company. It was a pleasure to have worked with him and under him."

He leaves his wife of 65 years, Betty, and three children, Peter, Jennifer and Nancy.
