London cabbies on trip to Bermuda

All for one: A team of cab drivers from the UK, who drove around London with Bermuda Tourism ads on their cabs, pose in Bermuda shorts for a photo at Tucker's Point Golf Club. The taxi drivers are here to learn more about the Island so that they can inform customers about Bermuda when they are back in the UK.

Bermuda has been playing host to cabbies from the UK as well as North American travel agents over the last two weeks in an effort to boost the Island's tourist numbers.

Six months ago the Bermuda Department of Tourism had its 'Feel the Love' branding placed on six London cabs.

The taxis also had their traditional black changed to pink.

The drivers of those cars arrived in Bermuda last weekend.

Cabbie Mark Williams, from Islington, said shortly before his arrival: "I can't wait to head over to Bermuda for some sunshine. I have been a cab driver for nine years and I have never done anything like this before.

"Driving a bright pink cab always causes a stir, with people taking photos and asking questions so it's great that I'll be able to have a conversation about the destination that I am advertising. Bermuda looks like a beautiful place and I have always wanted to go to the Crystal and Fantasy caves and see the pink beaches."

A Tourism spokeswoman said the cabbies will now be able to tell customers first hand all about the Island after this trip. While here they will be treated to a tour of St. George's and Hamilton and a round of golf at Tucker's Point Golf Club, which they enjoyed yesterday. They will also spend time enjoying Bermuda's fabulous beaches.

Seventy-five Canadian agents from Toronto and Ottawa were also in Bermuda from September 24 to 26. While here they took in Bermuda's events, culture, scenery, cuisine and other tourism offerings. The Bermuda Hotel Association partner hotels hosted the agents.

And the Department of Tourism's annual North American Tour Operator started last Saturday. While here the operators attended an industry trade show and participated in tours around the Island.

The summit, which Fairmont Southampton hosted, ended earlier this week. Attendees included the largest producers of business to the Island, and were represented by executives of companies such as Expedia, Travelocity, Gogo Vacations, JetBlue Getaways, Air Canada Vacations, WestJet Vacations and Travel Impressions.
