Magistrate hands down $5,550 in fines to motorist
A Pembroke man, who was caught with a knife in his bike seat following a Police chase, was fined $5,550 in Magistrates' Court.
Kevin Rawlins, brother of shooting victim Troy "Yankee" Rawlins, pleaded guilty last week to possessing a bladed article, failing to stop for Police, driving in a dangerous manner, having no vehicle licence or insurance, and possessing fraudulent documents.
Rawlins admitted the offences but insisted he had put the knife in his bike for fishing and forgotten about it.
Last Thursday, Magistrates' Court heard that Police had seen Rawlins commit a traffic offence, but when signalled to pull over, he continued to speed ahead, sparking a high-speed pursuit.
Rawlins, 50, of Court Street, allegedly sped through two intersections before he lost control of his motorcycle in the entrance of the Transport Control Department and slammed into a wall. Police searching the vehicle discovered a knife in the seat.
In court on Tuesday, Crown counsel Cindy Clarke stressed that the knife was the only piece of fishing equipment found in the bike, saying: "There is no evidence that he was fishing or had been fishing."
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Rawlins $3,000 for possessing the knife, saying: "The message should be clear. Do not carry around bladed articles with you."
Mr. Warner also fined Rawlins a total of $2,550 and issued 20 demerit points for the other offences.
