Man blames alcohol theft on 'drug psychosis'

A 37-year-old man claimed a fit of drug psychosis caused him to steal two bottles of Hennessy alcohol from Gosling's.

Jay Ming, of Middle Road Paget, pleaded guilty in Magistrates' Court yesterday to forging a name to use the charge account of Coconut Rock Restaurant at the Gosling's store, on Dundonald Street, Pembroke.

According to Crown counsel Nicole R. Smith, on November 22 around 11 a.m. Ming went to the store's counter with two litres of Hennessy VS and a litre of Hennessy VSOP.

When he told the sales woman to charge the $148 to Coconut Rock Restaurant, she inquired whether he worked for the establishment.

Ming told her he was the pot washer and then signed the receipt with the name Shawn Smith. When Gosling's called Coconut Rock to check on this, the restaurant said nobody had the authority to charge to that account.

On Tuesday, December 1, Ming turned himself in at the Hamilton Police Station and said he was experiencing a drug-induced psychosis and did not remember signing for the alcohol.

In court yesterday, Ming apologised to the community and reiterated his concern about the psychosis he claimed caused him to do this.

"I am chef and I have done my community a disservice by my actions. I have experienced some shock treatment at Westgate to appreciate my life before," he said.

"This is the first time I have so much to lose. I do not want to continue living my life in and out of prison. I had a relapse by drug inducing psychosis."

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner bailed Ming on $2,000 with one surety to appear in court on January 29 and ordered a psychological report.
