Man tells court he was drunk when he swore at the Police
A Hamilton Parish man pleaded guilty to using offensive words towards a Police officer but not guilty to possession of heroin when he appeared at Magistrates' Court.
Stacey Simpson, 24, of Cottage Hill Road, Hamilton Parish, was fined for offensive words and had a trial date set for the charge of possessing heroin.
Crown counsel Cindy Clarke told the court that Simpson was at the Hamilton Workman's club when he was arrested on May 15.
According to Ms Clarke officers entered the bar for a routine check on the establishment's liquor license.
After entering the Workman's Club, the officers were alerted after the defendant began harassing them. Ms Clarke told the court that Simpson began yelling at the officers.
"You f****** lot are dumb, you need to change your f****** names," he allegedly told officers.
At this point, the officers warned Simpson that the use of offensive language towards Police was an arrestable offence. When the officers had completed their business, they began to leave the premises. But before they could leave, Simpson began to yell again, Ms Clarke said.
"F***, F***, F***," Simpson allegedly yelled at the officers as they left.
Simpson was subsequently arrested and charged with using offensive language.
Simpson was fined $500 by Magistrate Juan Wolfe before he apologised to the court.
"I am sorry," Simpson said. "I was drunk at the time and it won't happen again."
Before he left court, Simpson was handed an additional charge of possessing heroin with intent to supply.
It was alleged that in November 2009 Simpson was found to have 1.69 grams of heroin in his possession by Police. According to Ms Clarke that amount of heroin is worth approximately $800 on the street.
Simpson pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of diamorphine (heroin) with intent to supply.
Mr. Wolfe granted bail at $1,000 and set a trial date for June.
